Keeping your cool on a narrowboat - Review of Transcool Evaporation Cooler
Originally purchased to use on the motorhome, this Transcool Evaporative Cooler has been a godsend at home in the recent UK heatwave (temperatures north of 34 deg C) We've not used it on the boat yet, but know it will work very effectively in a small space as it is ideal on the motorhome
This is not an air conditioning unit, so cannot be compared with the performance of such units. It works by converting water into water vapour and is more environmentally friendly as it uses only a tiny amount of electricity
You plug it in (two to three pin adaptor needed when using on 240 v) fill the intergral water tank with cold water, switch it on at the side to the intensity needed position the eyeball vents in a direction to cool you then bask in the cooling air. It is best switched on thirty minutes beforehand as it takes time to cool the space down. The water tank lasts around eight hours but it doesn't come to any harm if it runs out.
We use it on the motorhome, and recently in the bedroom at home. We have been able to get a good night's sleep in an attic bedroom which has been as hot as 32 deg
Pro's:
Lightweight and easily portable - 1.5 kg
Size: 22 x 22 x 25 cm - a neat compact size that easily fits in a small space
Significantly reduces heat levels in a small space
Makes sleeping much easier in the heat
Can also use during the day if windows and doors are closed
Con's
Noise levels - the higher you have it set, the noiser it is. We use earplugs
The price - around £350 - we got ours three years ago from Crick Boat Show, and prices have risen since then
Please note:
This is an independent review, we have not been approached by Transcool and are not receiving any commission for this review. It is just our own opinion based on use at home and in the motorhome
